#Orentober: Nothing Important Happened Today by Will Carver @Will_Carver @OrendaBooks #NothingImportantHappenedToday #NIHT #BookReview

It’s the 25th day of #Orentober and it’s the day that I get to share with you my review of the newest darkly unsettling psychological thriller Nothing Important Happened Today, in which I gratefully received a copy of last month and binged in a day (it was a Sunday, so it was acceptable to eat sandwiches and read all day!) NIHT is Will’s second Orenda birthed book, with the first being Good Samaritans – my first ever Orenda Book that I read, it was the book that hooked me on this publisher *heart eyes*. You can check out my GS review here!

Seth Beauman can’t sleep. He stays up late, calling strangers from his phonebook, hoping to make a connection, while his wife, Maeve, sleeps upstairs. A crossed wire finds a suicidal Hadley Serf on the phone to Seth, thinking she is talking to The Samaritans. But a seemingly harmless, late-night hobby turns into something more for Seth and for Hadley, and soon their late-night talks are turning into day-time meet-ups. And then this dysfunctional love story turns into something altogether darker, when Seth brings Hadley home… And someone is watching… Dark, sexy, dangerous and wildly readable, Good Samaritans marks the scorching return of one of crime fiction’s most exceptional voices.

Nothing Important Happened Today was published in e-book on the 14th of September, you can purchase directly from the Orenda E-bookstore here, if you’re a fan of a paperback read you’ll have to wait until the 14th of November I am afraid, you can pre-order from Waterstones here, or request from your local library!

Will Carver is the international bestselling author of the January David series. He spent  his early years in Germany, but returned to the UK at age eleven, when his sporting career took off. He turned down a professional rugby contract to study theatre and television at King Alfred’s, Winchester, where he set up a successful theatre company. He currently runs his own fitness and nutrition company, and lives in Reading with his two children. Good Samaritans was book of the year in Guardian, Telegraph and Daily Express, and hit number one on the e-book charts.

Nine people arrive one night on Chelsea Bridge. They’ve never met. But at the same time, they run, and leap to their deaths. Each of them received a letter in the post that morning, a pre-written suicide note, and a page containing only four words: Nothing important happened today. That is how they knew they had been chosen to become a part of the People Of Choice: A mysterious suicide cult whose members have no knowledge of one another. Thirty-two people on that train witness the event. Two of them will be next. By the morning, People Of Choice are appearing around the globe; it becomes a movement. A social media page that has lain dormant for four years suddenly has thousands of followers. The police are under pressure to find a link between the cult members, to locate a leader that does not seem to exist.
How do you stop a cult when nobody knows they are a member?

I’ve struggled to write this review, I’ve started and deleted multiple times – Nothing Important Happened Today blew my reader’s mind. As I’ve already said, I binged this deliciously distorted read on the Sunday immediately after receiving the book post (two days before), it whispered my name and told me to read it, and I hate to disappoint a highly anticipated read. Not a lot of authors can pull off the perfectly ingenious f***ed up thriller, but my gosh Carver can! He’s an evil mastermind I tell you!

This isn’t a psychological thriller that you can flit in and out of, it needs your full undivided attention, there’s twistiness and disturbing depths that will absorb your mind, all of your mind –  only then can you fully appreciate how awesomely warped Will Carver’s writer’s brain is. I had put NIHT at a high expectation level because I loved GS so much, well Will absolutely dusted that expectation, blew it totally out of the water and left me speechless and utterly brain – melted breathless. The perfect level of unreliability and distortion flew this book straight into my best reads for this year, I didn’t know where the plotline was going but you can bet your butts that from the first couple of pages that I was buckled in for the long haul.

I am a huge fan or true crime podcast, documentaries and books, the thought of a cult concept being entwined into this thriller immediately peaked that interest. I really enjoyed that Will had clearly delved into not only the masterminds behind mass murder and some famous cults, but also the psychology / dynamic of a cult, while working a sinister (it’s a whole lot of sinister sewn in to this one) twist of anonymity of ‘cult’ members not only from themselves but other members. superbly clever and unreliably addictive while being undeniably contorted in nature. You’ll be left with your jaw on the floor and hanging off the edge of your seat! Loved it absolutely.

If you’ve read Good Samaritans, there may be a crossover of characters which was cleverly included. The storyline is split into three; Cult, Killer and Legacy, with these parts we flick between the point of views of those who are part of the cult – the life woes that has drawn them to Chelsea Bridge on the same day with flecks from the mastermind behind action arrangements. Each part is sprinkled with bits of infamous cultish facts and the way a cult leader thinks, while herding his sheep. Fascinating, brutal and holds no psychological punches… yes I am rambling but I just want to grab potential readers, shake them and tell them that they must read Nothing Important Happened Today immediately!

Thanks for enduring my loved up book rambles, if you’re a fan of a crime thriller with a brain twisty after taste then THIS is the book for you! My verdict? 100% yes!
