It’s Christmas Eve and I am excited as ever to see what bookish gifts are sitting under the Christmas tree. Hopefully I’ve been a good girl this year and the book fairy has rewarded me greatly! My mother, very kindly has bought me two;
Life in a Jar by Jack Mayer. This is the story of Irena Sendler, a Polish Catholic support worker who organised a rescue network to save 2,500 children and babies from the Warsaw Ghetto by smuggling them out in her travel bag. Even training a dog to bark so the SS guards would not hear the babies cry. An inspirational story of a Polish heroine. Without her help, those children and babies she saved were destined for a dark future, including death.
Schindler’s Ark by Thomas Keneally, this is the book of the infamous film Schindler’s List. This book tells the story of a German industrialist, Oskar Schindler who helped to protect Jews in Nazi – occupied Poland.
Both of these books have been on my wish-list for months, I can’t wait to read them. It just shows that, it doesn’t matter how dark life has become, there is always kindness. In the wise words of Albus Dumbledore:
‘It’s not our abilities that show who we really are. It is our choices’
There are a few more reads I would like this year, these are just some of them! Fingers crossed the book fairy can hear me, so I don’t need to break my book buying ban. We’ll always have audio!
What’s on your bookish Christmas list? I would love to know! Have you rung any of the ones I’ve wished? Admit it, they look beautiful!
Whatever you’re reading this Christmas and whatever books you receive,
