The fictional couples you love to love / hate

We are five days away from Christmas, how bloody fast did that go? I am so under-prepared that I can’t help but stare enviously at the people on Instagram who obviously have impeccable planning and organisation skills. I’ll be that grumpy food shopper in Tesco swearing 3 days before Christmas, still hoping to get the desert I wanted. Fair warning; if you see me only approach if you have snuck wine in your coffee cup and you’re willing to share!

Recently I was talking to a friend who was still living in the Edward, Bella and Jacob love triangle that is Twilight. She thought Edwella (I make myself giggle sometimes) were the ‘perfect couple’ that came out of the franchise, I on the other-hand, admit to be Team Jacob through and through (#sorrynotsorry). But it made me think, of the fictional couplings that makes me so happy, and of the couplings that make me grind my teeth and want to vomit (Edwella is one of them!).

I’ve decided on two couples that I love and would definitely like to double-dinner date with, and another two who always decide that they want to get together on my hair-washing days. The question is, do you agree? I know this is a bookish blog, but I can’t help to sometimes refer to the shows / films, especially with these corkers!

My first LOVE to love coupling is Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. These people are complete opposite, H is logical and super intelligent, whereas R is so impulsive and passionate about everything he does, while being a bit of a scardy cat (cutie). The first few books of the Harry Potter boxset, you couldn’t imagine them falling in love, let alone 20 years down the line having beautifully ginger intelligent offspring! It wasn’t until The Goblet of Fire, when Hermione was swooning over Viktor Krum and Ron (subconsciously) trying to make her jealous did the penny finally drop! Then that kiss during The Battle of Hogwarts had every R&H fan cheering! One of the best things to come from J.K. Rowling’s masterpiece.

Another fictional coupling that I love to love is Bill Hodges and Holly Gibney. This isn’t a romantic coupling but I love their platonic friendship. I’m not going to lie, I thought that they’d make such a cute couple but after reading further into the Mr Mercedes trilogy, it’s apparent that Bill loves Holly as a father would love a daughter, and due to Holly’s dysfunctional family life I think she sees Bill in a fatherly way. These two just make me smile! I’m also going to throw in that I also love the coupling of Bill as good guy retired cop and Brady Hartsfield psychopathic bad guy. I read the books before the tv shows came out and I’d like to say that I feel the casting crew got the actors brilliantly right! (Plus who doesn’t love Brendan Gleeson?)

That’s the end of my love to love fictional couplings, next stop are the couples that I love to hate! Again, Hogwarts is our first stop with Ginny Weasley and Harry Potter (major cringe feels). I just found it a bit odd that Harry would pick moody always serious character Ginny for his girlfriend / wife. Personally, I have no clue what she brought to that table but the family that basically adopted Harry in. Harry sees Molly and Arthur as some type of parental figures then swoops Ginny off her feet? I can accept it now, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over the initial disappointment.

Last, but not least is the E.L. James created couple Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. I’m not even sure where to start on this one apart from ‘nope’. The relationship between these two seem to have romanticised emotionally and physically abusive behaviours between spouses. Every-time Ana leaves the ‘love trap’ she has fallen into, Christian grovels on bended knees and like a fish on a line she’s drawn right back in! The whole relationship is completely unrealistic, it just shouts ‘Woman in desperate need of saving. Only rich narcissistic men need apply.’ Not a great example is it? So for me this Grey – Steele duo is out!

These are just four of my love to love / hate couplings, i’m sure I could write forever and never list all the best ones! Do you agree or disagree? Is there a coupling that I should have included? Let me know! Thank-you for reading as always!

  1. See I think Ron and Hermione were mismatched but in the books Ginny is great. The film doesn’t do her justice as z main character. Im not a fan of 50 Shades and don’t like either character

    1. I’ve heard that a lot of people saying they don’t like Ron and Hermione! I’m just not a big Ginny fan but maybe I’m odd haha!

      1. I like book Ginny. I also liked book R and H do maybe it doesn’t come over well in film. There’s a few scenes in Deathly Hallows one (film) and there is a spark between H and H but I think it’s mainly in film.
Also, may be Ron needs a more dominant partner
